For many Disciples, church camp memories include campfires, friendships, and a familiar song that begins, “It only takes a spark…”
Summer church camps are underway across the Oklahoma Region, bringing together children, youth, counselors, and volunteers for experiences that leave a lasting impact.
Supported in part by the Oklahoma Disciples Foundation Grants Program, congregations across Oklahoma are helping make camp possible through scholarships, mission opportunities, and leadership development programs. More than 160 campers, counselors, and staff participated in Discovery, Chi Rho, and CYF camps.
One of the joys of camp ministry is seeing former campers return as counselors and volunteers, passing on the encouragement, faith, and friendships they once received. This summer also brought a special reminder of camp’s lasting influence when campers honored the memory of Rev. Paul Ragle (a longtime Disciple minister who was a cherished volunteer at annual summer camps) with a puppet created in his likeness. Thanks to a puppet stage built by First Christian Church of Perry and the efforts of Pam Cunningham, an elder at the church, Paul’s presence was felt once again through the traditions and relationships he helped create.
Whether through a campfire conversation, a week of service, or a new leadership opportunity, camp has a way of sparking faith that continues to grow for years to come.
This is what ministry looks like.
Ministries like these are made possible through the generosity of individuals, families, and congregations who choose to invest in lasting ministry through ODF endowments. To learn more, visit our endowments page.
