Part of our series highlighting the Endowments that make the ODF Grants Program possible

October is Minister Appreciation Month—a special time to celebrate the faithful leaders who guide our congregations with wisdom, compassion, and care. The Oklahoma Disciples Foundation (ODF) is proud to steward several endowments that honor that same spirit by providing grant funds to strengthen and support those in ministry.

The William E. and Millie A. Cress Ministerial Education Endowment – Established by longtime ODF supporters Bill and Millie Cress, this endowment helps fund education for those serving in ministry or ministry-supporting roles. Grants assist leaders who are working to complete ministerial training or gain new skills—such as worship technology, communication, or pastoral leadership—so they can better serve their congregations and communities.

The Thomas Jewell Fund for Ministerial Training – Created by the family of Thomas Jewell, former Oklahoma Regional Minister, and supported by more than 250 donors, this endowment celebrates his legacy of mentorship and practical ministry. Distributions have supported programs like Stole Camp in Oklahoma and Chalice Camp in Indiana, which give ministers hands-on leadership experience. In years when those programs aren’t held, the fund’s resources are distributed through the ODF Grants Program to help churches and seminaries in Oklahoma and Indiana strengthen ministerial leadership, especially in areas of practical ministry.

The Fund for the Education of Clergy & Laity – This fund encourages ministers and ministry leaders to explore the connection between faith and financial stewardship—cultivating joy in giving as a spiritual practice. Grants help leaders build transparency and accountability in their congregations and extend their pastoral care to include thoughtful, faithful guidance around generosity.

Together, these endowments help ensure that ministers and ministry leaders have the education, tools, and encouragement they need to serve faithfully and effectively. During Minister Appreciation Month, we give thanks for those who lead—and for the generosity that helps them continue to grow.

If you would like to celebrate the ministry leaders in your congregation, consider making a tax-deductible contribution to the ODF. Simply visit our Donate page and include the name of the minister or leader you are honoring—we will make sure they know about your thoughtful gift.
