In our continuing series on endowments that sustain the Oklahoma Disciples Foundation Grants Program, we highlight churches that, even as they closed their doors, chose to leave permanent legacies. These congregations ensured their mission and spirit of service continue to bless communities across Oklahoma.
First Christian Church, Ada – Organized in 1901, First Christian Church of Ada faithfully served its community for more than a century—supporting programs like Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, and youth ministries. When declining membership made it difficult to continue, the congregation prayerfully closed but established the First Christian Church, Ada Endowment, ensuring their generosity now supports new ministries through the ODF Grants Program.
First Christian Church, Stigler – Following its 2024 closing, First Christian Church, Stigler’s remaining members created an endowment as a lasting expression of faith and service. Sixty percent of the annual earnings go to the ODF Grants Program as an unrestricted gift, helping strengthen Disciples ministries and missions across the state.
Northwest Christian Church, Oklahoma City –When Northwest Christian Church in Oklahoma City concluded its ministry, it left behind a lasting legacy through two endowments. The first, originally established by a member of the congregation to support the church’s local missions, was later expanded when the church closed, adding additional funds to continue its mission of faith and service. Together, the donor and congregation chose to direct annual distributions from this endowment to the ODF Grants Program, ensuring their support for local missions would continue statewide. The second endowment, created as part of the church’s closing, provides Pastoral Support Grants to assist pastors with sabbaticals, pension supplements, and incentives to serve in rural areas and other areas of clergy support.
Faithful Endings, New Beginnings – These churches remind us that even when active ministry concludes, their spirit can continue to bless others. Their foresight ensures that vital ministries, pastors, and communities are supported for years to come.
